Self Love: The Best Valentine's Day Gift You Can Give Yourself

Writer: Nicole NgNicole Ng

"I am worthy of love"

As we finally approach to February, it also means that Valentines Day is around the corner. Valentines Day were traditionally meant to be celebrated as a couple but now the meaning for this day has changed significantly. You can celebrate Valentines Day on your own, your friends or with your family. Valentines Day does not just have to be celebrated with the people you are romantically involved with, but also the people you love. The one person that you should love most is yourself.

How did the idea of self love came about?

The idea of self love has come a long way and it has a beautiful story about the meaning. In Greek mythology, Nacissus was a hunter but was also attractive. He began visiting the river and admiring his looks. He was so in love with his looks that he began falling in love with himself. However, his self-love had also led him to distress which he decided to suicide.

To this day, the concept of self love still remains prominent in our society. We see it everywhere, whether it is on social media, literature or within the entertainment industry. One example is the movie, Love in Taipei which explores how the protagonist Ever Wong finds herself through her summer trip at Taipei, Taiwan.

Just like Ever Wong, here are ways for you to celebrate self-love.

  • Hang out with your friends

Sometimes, you might be away from your parents and the only support system you have is your friends. Taking a day off to hang out with your friends is a good practice to creat a closer bonds with your friend group and to explore yourself.
